Challenges

“When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny.”

Look around, it might be gone tomorrow...

Hello Folks!

Today I have this '' I want to write me off day'' tendency and since I got the comment of upgrading my blog twice the two last days, here I am writing to you once again. Cabriella if you are reading this, thanks for a wonderful day! You did a great job!

Almost 11 th of June 2009...One year since my graduation day has passed and gone by..Where do I stand today? Surely not on the doorstep of my high school with my white dress and graduation hat doing it once again. Life has passed forward to new persons, new enviroments and exeperiences, at some point it has to do that right? Although yesterday when I saw the first student walking with his white hat, I was feeling a bit nostalgic, missing the old times.

Time, time, time..They say that time is money, do you agree? I am not quite sure, although I am sure that it passes by like a flash! Just wonder what a difference a few seconds, minutes, hours can make..within seconds you can miss your buss to school ( check!) within minutes your life may change..just by one heartbeat, a car accident, going to the dentist or falling asleep in eternity.

Today while I was watching the last episode for this season of Grey's Anatomy ( yes you may call me a geek, but I really love the quotes and the persons in that serie) The main person, Meredith Grey ended the episode with those words:

'' Did you say it? I love you.... I don't ever want to live without you... you changed my life... Did you say it? Make a plan... set a goal, work toward it..but every now and then look around... cause this is it...it might all be gone tomorrow. '' ( watch the link below)

I wonder what have I managed through this year? And then I refer to my University studies, that are so important for myself. And yes that is important but I do happen to forget all the funny parts! Because once or too many times I over do it by stressing through time, thinking that If I do that, then it will be easier for me to reach my destination. But no I am wrong!

So if somebody asked me whether I would want to turn back time? I would say no. Because this year...I have made great friends and learned to see the small things in life, who happen to be the most important ones!

My advice to you? Read between the lines!

Goodnight, readers=)

Ποιός μπορεί να πει πως τα γηρατειά ολοκληρώνουν τη ζωή;
Κανένας.
Κι αν το πει, δεν ένιωσε τι πάει να πει ζωή.
Η ζωή δεν ολοκληρώνεται στη γη.
Μόνο κόβεται. "

The weekdays!

I thought of sharing one thought of mine I had today, while I was resting. The thought was namely reconsidering the days of the week (I know what a thought!..).

If you asked me which day in the week I hate the most, I would probably say sundays. Even though a sunday is the first day of the week, for me it always feels like the last one. And not always but most of the times, a sunday is served with a plate of bitterness. The funny parts of the weekend and feeling ''free'' is over. The day afterwards ( the Monday) you usually have to return to your everyday rutin ( in this case not tomorrow due to Easter holidays here in sweden!) , either if that is a jobb, school, education at college or university etc.

When it comes to the naming of the weekdays, I think that is a long story. But in the most of the languages ( in tha case not in Greek) ''monday'' is named after the moon. Would that mean that sunday is named after the sun? sunny day? Well of course there are many religious observances when it comes to the etymology of the days! (For those who are more interested check )

Anyhow! Good night readers! I don't know about you, but I will enjoy my sleepy monday!

A nice monday to you all! =)

Baby socks with the weekdays written on them! cute right?

Relevance in subjects?

The last past days I have had many conversations and long discussions with my close ones. The themes have been handling with true friendship, motivation, competetncy, drawing skills, future studies, dreams, sports, fashion etc. But what I have come to notice, is that we all in the end worry for the same reason. Namely the future and our possibilities, our own skills to reach it.

I thought of dedicating today's post to my beloved cousin Niki who has been struggling the past two years to reach her own dream, namely to become an architect. What I admire the most with her as I am writing to you this moment, is that she has been struggling with pleasure!! She has not seen this as a denial. Despite she has found even more motivation, she has grown as an artist! And has gathered a lot of experience in her package. Nowadays Niki is having her own clothing mark, which is named Nikideluxe! The whole project started while she was still going at high school and has grown since then! I must say that I am a really proud cousin and fan!

For those who are interested in knowing more! Please do visit Niki's blogg.

Well my conclusions? Nothing is impossible! on the contrary everything is possible! So stop with words as can not and will not! And start beliveing in yourself, because that is the only way to reach your goals in life!

So what do you say? I say positive thinking!

Could our goals be related to sports?

Eurovision song contest 2009!

Eurovision song contest is a contest that has been taking place for approximately 54 years. A long time I would say, for a gathering of different types of music, clothing, dancing and performances. But mostly the gathering of so many different cultures and languages! ( even though the most of the countries sing in english nowadays!)

I find the contest amusing! Not everyone can be on the top and some types of songs are very humorous, with funny costumes and acts! Others are very good..others not that good. There can be a good quality and variety of voices and there can also be horrible ones! But the taste is in the eye of the beholder I assume!

I don't know about your favourite one/s this year but mine is surely Sakis Rouvas- This is our night! But I will have to ''investigate'' the rest of the countries performances as well!

I just wanted to post a picture of the good looking artist!

Sakis Rouvas

What do you say girls isn't he handsome? ;)

Do you have any favourite songs/ artists this year? What is your opinion/s about the contest?

Identity through language

A woman called Julia Penelope once said; ''language forces us to perceive the world as somebody has presented it to us. '' If I blamed her for being wrong then I would have been a lair. Since our language determines how we think and also limit the way we see our world.

If I had to answer, to an’ everyday matter' question such as ''Why Language is that substantial for us humans?'' I would probably say that language is considered to be an exclusively human mode of communication; without the means to communicate, human beings would be in a lost and incomprehensible world. Therefore, it is extremely beneficial to communicate with others because it helps us to reach out to people and to unite with others that are not of our same sort. It has always been important due to the fact of revitalization since it has transmitted culture and identity from one generation to another. But has also been a profound symbol of both national and personal identity.

Furthermore language is considered to be a complicated dance between internal and external interpretations of our identity. Apart from physical appearance and bodily functions affected by the genes, knoweledge and hairatages. Has our personal enviroment been another major factor when it determines linguistic affilation, values a system in the same way we value our language and gives us a sence of belonging. Then in the most cases, the place where we grew up or still live has a special significance. On the contrary this may also be very complicated when interaction between genetic and enviromental effects may cause friction and conflict.

However we sometimes desire to belong to a more dominant group in terms of economic status, political power or even culture. Then is language a crucial and dynamic factor that plays a major role in creating a sense of ability and strenght. when we usually express our options and feelings through our mother tongue and other types of languages such as English, French and even body language. Not only the language it self, but also the way we speak, our accent and dialect. Which usually gives us a personal identity which makes us all individuals and each and everyone of us special in our own way.

Another important component is the level of usage, refering to a formal and an informal language. They usually say that when ideas fail, words come in very handy, informal language is spoken by most people every day an example is netspeak, the distinetive language. Where the rules of punctuation, capitalization and sentence structure are ignored. While on the other hand high thoughts demand high language and then is a formal form more appropriate.

There are many differences between a mother tongue and other languages. Especially when it has been with a person through all the years of its life. But in today’s society english has come to be the second most important language, after the mother tongue. This is a substantial reason why many English learns speak the English laguage that fluent as if they were native speakers themselves. Moreover the advantage of speaking a second language opens a new window into people’s lives. The individual can play different roles just by knowing another language and speaking in a certain way in one language and a completely different way in another one. In addition to this, language helps the individual to break down obstacles.

To sum up I would like to point that the world would be a very tedious place without its phraseology and verbalization!

An ’’eye-opener’’ maybe?

A few days ago I was wondering what is substantial in my life? Every day I struggle at the university going to my lectures, exams etc. and to be honest I think that not only for me but for many students such situations seem hopeless sometimes. Although that I am proud of my doings by so far, I always in some kind of way seem to be unsatisfied by what I have reached so far in life. I always seek for my deepest desire, namely to become a physician. Sometimes I even seek for problems when there really are none. So I wonder what should I do next? Do we always have to do something? Can’t we just let things fall towards the right direction?

And within such moments…I get on a bus, I find a place to sit and just by sitting there I get the answers to my thoughts. For instance a day like that was today, when I was returning home after my examination and I saw a young boy sitting at a wheelchair, being handicapped. His age was probably around 19 but he was probably thinking as a four-year old boy. A young woman, who was escorting him, was holding a purple glove puppet and each time he looked at it he smiled.

That moment gave me an ‘’eye-opener’’. Why can’t life seem that simple for us? Just by looking at something colorful. That person was around my age, things we have done through our lives, basal things for instance running, has been impossible for him. This might sound very funny, but we actually take things for granted and we barely value the small things in our weekday. That person could be as anybody else, not that he is different from us just that the thing that he has a perturbation in his chromosomes, DNA.

To sum up I just wanted to say that we should be careful for what we wish for, because nothing can be more important than our health.

So next time you get on a bus, just wonder...How many people sit around you, how many thoughts, and how many different stories?

Isn’t it funny, what a bus tour can do?

All you need is love...

I thought of starting my first post with something more general, that in many ways affect all of us. The following post's theme is partly based on a novel that inspired my writing.

A young woman named Zadie Smith is a well known young author. Her last novel, on beauty is an enjoyable literary novel. In her book she observes humanity and dissects human pretensions. By that, she makes contemporary life seem both peculiar and poetic. The author enters her second ‘’chapter’’ with a quote by Elaine Scarry. It goes somehow like this; ‘’to misstate, or even merely understate, the relation of the universities to beauty is one kind of error that can be made. A university is among the precious things that can be destroyed.’’

Have you ever reevaluated? We humans usually endeavor for something out of the ordinary. We settle down, more often making dreams and wishing that they will someday become reality. We strive to fulfill our goals. Commonly we also make plans for a lifetime and almost always we are being definitely accurate to ‘’the meaning of life’’.

But most importantly we fall in love, we perpetrate mistakes and in the end we usually do not even have the slightest idea of what makes life truly beautiful. And all that because we often take things for granted.

If we look back in time, we will distinguish that each and every one of us has at least once in our lifetime searched for a personal identity, or maybe still do. What makes it so hard to define one person, to define ourselves? Our identity consists roughly of those properties that make us unique as individuals and different from others. It may be the way we see and define ourselves or even the network of values and convictions that structure our lives.

Therefore we will always acquire a new individual identity, or perhaps without even knowing it carry on without one. But the point is that while we continue searching for identities, we just happen to forget something very central, namely that we are all of the same kind. As H.J. Blackman once said ‘’ we refuse to be each other’’. We are humans and most importantly we are those, we were born to be. We cannot change as persons, our heritages and backgrounds; we can just change the circumstances around us and embrace our personal identity.

Throughout our personal experiences, economical diversity, race, class, political views, clashes of culture and religions in the depth we all strive for one purpose, namely to ‘’live happily ever after’’. But there is a variety of persons that frequently take fairytales as exceptions and try to be more realistic, they look at their own factuality. In fact they do not even believe in their dreams, they think that those precisely like the stars, are not predicated anywhere and may whenever just fall. Dreams are just one part of their sleep and liberation for their minds. To be honest persons like that are very pessimistic, they just see life from one angle. Things usually have many frames of references and they may often lose the meaning of life.

On the other hand there are persons who happen to believe in their visions and aims and find them as a decampment that conducts them to their felicity. These persons have the opportunity to find the distinction in their lives and move forward. It is also known that the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

Another substantial part of our humanity is to ‘’fall in love’’, a locution that often brings both happiness and virulence in one’s heart. Everything starts with empathy, the falling follows and the trust which leads to love. Marriage and family, everything follows the tradition and of course the path of nature. But this path may also lead to betrayals, disappointments and regrets. Mistakes are conducted that may never be forgotten or forgiven. And as we stand there at the boulevard of our broken dreams, we realize that we must take a decision, either to condone a person or to continue on without it. The action that hurts the most is the belief of ‘’knowing’’ a person for that many years, while actually not. Because trying to forget someone you love, is like trying to remember someone you never met. Stories vary, such do love. But we need love to continue, we, humans are created this way.

While the key to the door lock; is that we must face things in life with equanimity and objectivity. We must stand up proudly no matter what happens and continue with our show, because life is full of surprises that may pop up unexpectedly. To sum up the spicy ingredient of life, is love. We cannot buy love; we can only earn it throughout our doings. So before we search for the substantial in our life, we should just reconsider for a minute and then see that nothing else matters other than to be loved and love.
